The Morning After: 'Hawks Crushed By Canucks

Canucks Crush Blackhawks
It was an inauspicious start to the NHL semifinals for the Chicago Blackhakws who were crushed by the Vancouver Canucks 5-1 in Game One of their series. The 'Hawks lone goal came early in the third when Patrick Kane scored on a power play. Antti Niemi allowed all five goals, facing 25 shots. Cristobal Huet played the third period in net and stopped all three shots he faced. Coach Quenneville, though, refused to blame goaltending mishaps for the loss, instead blaming the fact the Canucks go so many second chances: "I'm not blaming the goaltending at all. They were around the net and had second and third opportunities. That's an area we need help, and that's an area we need to be better." The 'Hawks will try to rally back for Game Two tomorrow night (8:00 p.m., CSN).

Fire Draw With Chivas USA
The Fire's two-game win streak ended last night as they drew with Chivas USA 1-1 at Toyota Park. Baggio Husidic’s goal in the 53rd minute gave the Fire a 1-0 lead; Patrick Nyarko drew the Chivas goalie out and then made a cross to Husidic who put the ball in for the goal. Later, in the 76th minute, Chivas answered with a header off a corner kick and that's how the two teams would finish. Next week, the Fire travel to Canada to face Toronto.

Cubs Rally Past D-Backs
The Cubs found themselves down early but managed to rally past the Diamondbacks for a 7-5 win in the third game of their four-game series. Down 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer to tie the game and in the bottom of the eighth, Derrek Lee got a bases loaded single to give the Cubs the lead for good. Carlos Silva allowed all five AZ runs over five innings and got a no decision; Sean Marshall was credited with the win and Carlos Marmol got the save after making the ninth inning more exciting than it should have been. The teams wrap up the series this afternoon with Tom Gorzelanny taking the hill for the Cubs, still in search of his first win of the season (1:20 p.m., WGN).

Sox Survive Yankees Rally
The Sox survived a late rally by the Yankees and came away winners 7-6. Andruw Jones had homers in the first and third innings and Mark Kotsay homered to help the Sox build a 5-1 lead for John Danks, who exited the game after five innings with the Sox still up 5-2. But Scott Linebrink gave up four runs to the Yankees in the sixth, capped off by a homer from former Sox Nick Swisher. But it was A.J. Pierzynski playing the hero in the top of the seventh with a two-run double that put the Sox up for good as the Sox bullpen held the Yankees scoreless the rest of the way. The two teams wrap up the series this afternoon as Mark Buehrle takes the mound for the Sox (12:05 p.m., CSN/TBS).
