The Morning After: Cubs Power Past D-Backs, Yanks Slam Sox

Cubs Take Series From Arizona
There's something about the Arizona Diamondbacks that awoke the Cubs' bats as they closed out the series with their third straight win, a 10-5 victory. The Cubs scored 33 runs over the course of the four-game series, winning three. And Alfonso Soriano continued feasting on Arizona pitching, belting two two-run homers (first and fifth innings); Marlon Byrd also homered and had three RBI in the game. For once, starter Tom Gorzelanny got the offensive support he needed as the Cubs spotted him an early 7-0 lead that helped him garner his first victory of the year. John Grabow, who's been shaky this year, allowed three runs in the ninth, but the D-backs weren't able to get closer than that. The Cubs are now back at .500 (13-13) and head to Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates, starting Tuesday night (6:05 p.m., WGN).

Yanks Slam Sox
The Yankees, like the Cubs, had a big weekend, scoring 24 total runs in three games against the Sox, half of those in a 12-2 victory yesterday. Sox ace Mark Buehrle was roughed up for five runs over five innings and Tony Pena didn't fare any better, giving up six runs (five earned) over 1.2 innings. The Sox bats were silent until the ninth inning when Paul Konerko knocked his Major League-leading 12th homer of the year, a three-run shot. But it was the lone bright spot for the Sox in the loss. Ozzie, who found himself given the boot by the home plate ump in the seventh, said:

"You have to turn the page right away. You have to worry about what's next. It no matter if it's good or bad in this game. You have a good day today, it doesn't mean anything tomorrow. Hopefully, we turn this thing and play the way back home the way we played last series [sweep of Seattle]. It will be a test of how good we are and see how we are going to do for the next couple of weeks."

At 10-15 on the year, the Sox hope to turn it around against the Kansas City Royals, starting tonight (7:10 p.m., WCIU).
