Last Friday Saturday The Glitch Mob kicked off their 32-city tour at Double Door to promote their new album, Drink The Sea (out on May 25). While the L.A.-based group has been around since 2006, releasing mixtapes and remixes and the like, Drink The Sea marks the trio's official debut album. Stepping into Double Door Friday we were greeted by darkness, both literally and figuratively, as we had no idea what The Glitch Mob would deliver from its debut, or exactly how it would sound. Several days later, we still aren't.
Justin Boreta, Ed Ma (edIT), and Josh Mayer are the men behind the frenetic, relentless, hard-hitting electronic music that has been garnering more and more attention. The trio met in the L.A. electronic music scene and have always been dedicated to being different and undefinable. Friday they played Drink The Sea in its entirety to a venue full of sweaty, dancing fans and proved to be just that. Decked out with Lemurs (one of Daft Punk's live instrument of choice), drums, guitars, projected visuals and more, The Glitch Mob laid out a wonderful album full of rich melodies, intricate basslines and simply ridiculous drums, resulting in a live show as immersive and physically-jolting as we'd ever seen. Melodies were thrown off course by earth-shattering beat-drops, rivaling the best of what electronic dance music has to offer. The entire night was filled with tension-building-and-releasing moments like these, and the crowd ate up every bit of it.
With an impressive debut and an even more impressive live show, The Glitch Mob brings a truly unique element to the electronic music scene. They graze a lot of genres, everything from rock to drum and bass to IDM to electro to hip-hop and beyond, and yet such a mish-mash comes together in a sound that is becoming undeniably their own. Not bad for a few guys on their debut.
