Fish Fry Cubs
After last weekend's dream debut for Cubs' rookie Starlin Castro, the new shortstop got a rude awakening at Wrigley Field during last night's 4-2 loss to Florida. An Alfonso Soriano RBI single in the second gave the Cubs an early 1-0 lead and Soriano added another RBI in the sixth, leaving the Cubs with a 2-1 lead heading into the seventh when Ted Lilly gave up three runs, including a two-run homer, that gave the Marlins the lead for good. But it was Castro who heard the loudest boos. An error in the third was followed by an error in the sixth (which eventually led to the tying run for Florida). The rookie made his third error of the night in the eighth after which he heard the boos loud and clear from the Wrigley faithful. Said Lou, "He learned a few things tonight." Plus, the Cubs' offensive struggles continue. For the sixth time in seven games, the Cubs failed to score three runs and all six of those games are losses. At 14-19, the Cubs are in fifth place in the division and need to make a run if they don't want to be eliminated by July 4th. They'll try to right the ship tonight when they send Randy Wells to the mound (7:05 p.m., CSN).
Mexico Edges Senegal
Mexico got a 60th minute goal from Alberto Medina to give the El Tri a 1-0 victory over Senegal in an international friendly World Cup warm-up. Former Fire midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco made an appearance as a sub in the 56th minute to the delight of the sellout crowd of over 60,000 fans. And if you're still in the soccer mood, the U.S. Men's National Team will reveal its initial 30-man roster today at 1 p.m.
