The Morning After: Cubs End Skid

Cubs End Skid, Up-End Marlins
We admit we had huge doubts about Carlos Silva this season, but the player acquired in the Trade To Rid The Cubs Of Milton Bradley is off to a 4-0 start after yesterday's 4-3 win over Florida. The win also halted a four-game losing the streak the Cubs had managed to mire themselves in. Mike Fontenot hit a two-run double in the second to give the Cubs an early 2-0 lead. The Marlins answered in the fourth with a two-run single to tie the ballgame, but the Cubs answered with two more in the fifth, courtesy a Marlon Byrd single and a wild pitch. Closer Carlos Marmol made things more interesting than they should have been in the ninth, allowing a run and allowing the tying and go-ahead runs on base, but he held on for his fifth save of the season. And a win is a win and the Cubs sure needed a win. The Cubs get today off, which is good considering the weather, before welcoming the Pirates to town for a weekend series on Friday (1:20 p.m., WGN).

Sox Can't Hold Off Twins
The Sox got off to an early lead over the Twins but couldn't hold on for the win as they fell to Minnesota 3-2 in the second of their two-game series. Paul Konerko had a two-run single in the top of the first, but the Sox would put up all goose-eggs after that. The Twins scored three runs off of starter John Danks, who dropped to 3-2 on the season with the loss despite that pretty good outing. Still, the offensive let-down had some, including Ozzie, flustered: "I was excited the first inning. I said, 'OK, we're bringing back what we showed last night.' All of a sudden for seven or eight innings, nothing was done." Like the Cubs, the Sox are off to day, traveling to Kansas City where they'll start a weekend series tomorrow night against the Royals (7:10 p.m., CSN).
