The Morning After: Cubs, Sox Both Winners

By Marcus Gilmer in News on May 19, 2010 3:00PM

Cubs Rumble Past Rockies
The Cubs swept their two games set with the Rockies, taking down Colorado by a 6-2 final last night as two Carloses (Silva and Zambrano) bookended the night. Silva gave up both runs over six innings, striking out four, and moving to 5-0 on the year. After three different relievers came through in the seventh and eighth inning, Zambrano, supposedly moved to long relief, came on for a scoreless ninth to secure the win. The Cubs used singles and ground-outs to bat runners around for three runs in the fourth and did so again in the eighth; Ryan Theriot and Starlin Castro repped the middle infield well as both had two RBI each. The victory also gives the Cubs a modest three-game winning streak, something they hope to keep up when they open another quick two-game set tonight in Philadelphia (6:05 p.m., CSN).

Sox Tame Tigers
In what ended up being a quick, one-game series, the Sox took care of business in Detroit, downing the Tigers 6-2. Down 2-1 in the fourth, Juan Pierre got the game winning hit with a two-run double and Omar Vizquel would single in Pierre to give the Sox the 4-2 lead. Carlos Quentin would get a two-run double of his own in the eighth just for fun. Meanwhile, Freddy Garcia pitched a solid six innings for the Sox, earning his third win on the year and Santos, Putz, and Jenks threw one scoreless inning of relief each to secure the Sox their one-game series victory over Detroit. The Sox now come back home where they'll open a two-game set with the Los Angeles California Angels of Anaheim California tonight (7:10 p.m., CSN+).
