Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week:" McGovern's Oatmeal Stout

2010_05_28_BOTW.JPG Belfast Bay Brewing Company in Belfast, ME, seems an unlikely place to find a good oatmeal stout. But that's just what we found with their McGovern's Aatmeal Stout. Drinks Over Dearborn had this and McGovern's Lobster (Red) Ale in stock while visiting a few weeks back. While the brightly hopped Lobster Ale would have been a better pick with the weather, the Oatmeal Stout has its merits for a long holiday weekend.

If you do buy this, be careful when pouring it. This is a very fizzy beer and the decanting needs to be controlled. The beer gives off scents of chocolate, grain and roasted malt. chocolate and roast malt also dominate on the palate, but not in an overpowering way. Thick as this beer's head was, McGovern's Oatmeal Stout had a medium-bodied mouthfeel. Very, very smooth.
