Sox Edge Rays
The White Sox rode a strong pitching performance and a key pair of homers to a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays last night. Freddy Garcia was sharp, allowing two runs but striking out seven over seven innings of work. For offense, the Sox got a two-run Alex Rios homer in the fourth and a Ramon Castro solo homer in the fifth to give them what would prove the be the winning runs. Gordon Beckham knocked in an insurance run in the ninth but the Sox bullpen held the Rays scoreless with Matt Thornton recording his second save on the year. Garcia was happy with his effort, a nice recovery from his last start when he was lit up by the Marlins, leaving that performance behind: "You got to be that way. You can't carry whatever happens. When you play, you got to put it on the side. Throw my game." The Sox hope to keep it going against the Rays when John Danks takes the mound tonight (6:10 p.m., CSN).
The Cubs and a reminder after the jump.
Cards Whoop Cubs
It was a rough day for Randy Wells and the Cubs who were whooped by the rival St. Louis Cardinals 7-1. The Cards got all the offense they would need in the game's first 10 minutes, starting the game with six straight hits that resulted in a 5-0 lead and Randy Wells being yanked without recording an out. The Cubs bullpen then silenced the Cards until John Grabow gave up a two-run homer in the ninth, but it didn't matter as the Cubs bats were as ineffective as Wells. Only a Tyler Colvin solo homer in the fifth gave the Cubs something other than '0' on the scoreboard. Wells was, of course, pretty hard on himself after the game but owned his poor performance: "There's not a whole lot to say about today," Wells said. "I looked at the tape, and I was up a little bit in the zone. Like the baseball gods say, I was ambushed today... I'm pretty embarrassed." The Cubs hope to rebound for revenge behind the still-undefeated Carlos Silva today (3:10 p.m., FOX).
