Rangers Out-Slug Sox
The Sox and Rangers had a high-scoring affair as the Sox opened a new homestand on a losing note, falling to Texas 9-6. The Sox jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but after starting scoreless, Mark Buehrle ultimately gave up six runs in 5.1 innings as the Rangers rallied to a 7-4 lead. The Sox rallied in the bottom of the sixth, scoring twice and having the bases loaded, but they couldn't take back a lead and the Rangers scored a few insurance runs off the Sox bullpen to give themselves some breathing room. The Sox hope Freddy Garcia can help the team get a rebound victory when the two teams face off again tonight (7:10 p.m., CSN+).
Pirates Best Cubs
The Cubs lost to the Pirates 3-2 and fell to 1-7 against the Pirates on the year. Xavier Nady gave the Cubs an early 2-0 lead with a homer in the third and Ted Lilly pitched a fantastic first seven innings, allowing only one run. But it unraveled in the eighth when he gave up a two-run shot that proved to be the winning hit for Pittsburgh. In a game where the Cubs' lineup featured a lot of back-ups, the team still went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, leaving eight men on base. A frustrated Piniella said after the game, "I'm not going to talk about it anymore. We got beat, and we'll go out and get 'em tomorrow, and do the best we can. That's all we can do." Carlos Zambrano returns to the starting rotation tonight as the Cubs try to do the best they can (6:05 p.m., CSN).
