The Morning After: Sox Fall, Cubs Rained Out

Sox Fall To Rangers
Once again, the Sox gave up nine runs to the Rangers, losing to Texas by a 9-5 final. This in spite of a pair of homers from Paul Konerko, who knocked in four of the Sox five runs. But the Rangers would score all they needed by the third inning as they tagged a struggling Gavin Floyd who gave up six runs over 2.2 innings before being yanked. Down 9-2, Konerko delivered his 15th and 16th homers of the year (enough to tie him for the Major League lead) but it wasn't nearly enough to make up ground. Konerko did his best to remain upbeat after the loss: "We had a couple of games early in the year where our pitching was there and we weren't scoring a whole bunch of run. I think lately it's been the reverse of that. It's frustrating. It's not fun to lose more than half the time. But there's a ton of games left, and we have to try to keep putting it together. There have been flashes of all facets at some point, and you just have to hope at some point it's going to click." The Sox will try to prevent a sweep when they close out their series tonight (7:10 p.m., WCIU).
Cubs, Bucs Rained Out
Carlos Zambrano's return to the rotation was put on hold by last night's rain-out in Pittsburgh. But the teams won't have to wait long to make it up. With next Monday off for both teams, they'll make the game up then with an early 11:35 a.m. start. The Cubs are off today as they head to Houston for a weekend series starting tomorrow night (7:05 p.m., WGN).
