Celebrate National Donut Day

2010_06_04_donuts.jpg Okay, so maybe we're a little late on the draw with this, as most of you have probably already eaten breakfast. But there's always room for donuts, right? Today is National Donut Day and you can get yourself a free donut at any Dunkin Donuts location with the purchase of any beverage (here's a list of Dunkin locations across the city even though you probably already have the closest one to you memorized). Krispy Kreme is also getting in on the action [PDF] with free donuts - no strings/purchases attached - but Elk Grove and Midlothian are the only area Krispy Kremes participating.

National Donut Day was started way back in 1938 to honor women who served donuts to soldiers in WWI. In addition to the free donut (with beverage purchase), Dunkin also announced the winner of its "Create Dunkin's Next Donut" contest: "Monkey-see Monkey-donut," a bananas foster-filled donut with chocolate icing, topped with Reese’s® Peanut Butter shavings, created by Rachel Davis of Sharon, Massachusetts.
