The Morning After: Cubs, Sox Both Losers

'Stros Top Cubs
Carlos Zambrano returned to the starting rotation and while it wasn't a bad outing, it was brief and the Cubs couldn't get in the win column, losing to Houston 3-1. Zambrano only pitched 4.1 innings in his return as a starter but gave up all three Houston runs. Meanwhile, the Cubs offense...you guessed it: struggled. The team was 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. A Marlon Byrd RBI double produced the only run for the Cubs who have now lost four in a row and have gone a week without a win. They try to halt the downward spiral tonight when they send Ryan Dempster to the mound (6:05 p.m., CSN).
Indians Blast Sox
The Sox held a 1-0 lead after five innings but it all came unraveled at the end as Cleveland blasted the Sox 10-1. John Danks pitched a solid first five innings, but it all came undone in the sixth when he gave up four runs. Sergio Santos replaced Danks but then got tagged for a pair of runs in the seventh and Scott Linebrink was responsible for four runs in the eighth. The Sox had their own struggles at the plate, stranding eight men on base and going hitless in five at-bats with runners in scoring position. Guillen boiled it down after the game: "Three things happened today: bad pitching, bad hitting, bad game. I can't describe this game anyway else." The Sox hope to ride Jake Peavy to a rebound win later tonight (6:05 p.m., WGN).
