We were under the impression that Mazes was no more. With the Chicago folk-pop band spreading themselves across the U.S. - core member Charles D'Autremont moved to Brooklyn last year, bassist Tom Smith is about to move to San Francisco and the rest of the band will stay in Chicago for now - we figured the fivesome was splitting up for good. But these guys aren’t letting a few thousand miles stop them from making the buoyant, lo-fi melodies that brought them together; they’ll continue to make music under the name Mazes, collaborating long-distance and coming together for shows. We’re excited to see what direction this new setup takes the band, as Smith and D'Autremont inevitably become influenced by their surroundings and give the band’s sound an East Coast / West Coast / Midwest dynamic.

But before Smith leaves for San Fran, the band will come together here in Chicago (even D'Autremont is coming back home from NY) to begin recording their third album and perform a series of four shows. This mini Chicago tour will celebrate two new releases: their second album, Mazes Messes' which is a limited edition 7" single consisting of 7 songs in 7 minutes recorded in 7 days made released on Record Store Day and Mazzzes, a free remix/demix of their self-titled debut album (available June 15). You can stream their self-titled debut and Mazes Messes’ for free on Mazes' Bandcamp site, where you can also download Mazzzes when it becomes available June 15. And if you like what you hear, check out one of their live performances before the band splits geographically. Full list of shows below.
