Cubs Blow Lead To Brewers
Stop us if you've heard this one before: the Cubs got a good performance out of their starting pitcher, mustered a minimum of offense, and then the bullpen blew the game as the Cubs lost. This time, it was a 3-2 loss to the Brewers. Ted Lilly pitched eight solid innings, allowing only one run and striking out eight. The game was scoreless until Tyler Colvin knocked in a run in the top of the eighth, but with runners at second and third, the Cubs couldn't muster any more that inning. Lilly allowed a run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Cubs scored again in the top of the ninth to get a 2-1 lead (and again left a runner stranded in scoring position). Then it was up to Carlos Marmol who wound up with his third blown save of the season, allowing a two-out, two run single and giving the Brewers the win. Carlos Zambrano heads to the hill tonight as the Cubs try to not screw up this time (7:10 p.m., CSN).
Tigers Ride Big Seventh Past Sox
The White Sox seemed to be heading to a close win over the Tigers last night but then the seventh inning started and it all fell apart as Detroit scored six times and wound up 7-2 winners. A Mark Kotsay two-run homer in the fourth gave the Sox an early lead and Gavin Floyd did his part, allowing only one run over six innings. But the Tigers teed off on the Sox bullpen in the seventh, lighting up Matt Thornton for five runs and scoring another off Scott Linebrink. Ozzie tried to remain upbeat about Thornton, saying after the game, "Obviously he failed today, but that's what happens. Matt's been throwing the ball well all year long. I think that's one very positive thing about this ballclub." The Sox try to rebound against their division rivals tonight with Freddy Garcia getting the start (7:10 p.m., WCIU).
