The Morning After: Sox Squeak Past Cubs

It's a tale of two teams heading in opposite directions. Yesterday's 2-1 victory [Sox recap, Cubs recap] was the Sox fourth-straight win while it was the Cubs' third-straight loss. The Sox were also able to hand Cubs hurler Carlos Silva his first loss of the season. Despite the loss, Silva was still sharp, allowing two runs over seven innings and striking out six Sox. But Mark Buehrle was better, scattering eight hits but allowing no runs while striking out seven Cubs over 6.2 innings as the Cubs couldn't capitalize on scoring opportunities. Paul Konerko was the offensive hero for the Sox with a pair of RBI singles, one in the first and one in the seventh. The Cubs managed to score off Sox closer Bobbby Jenks in the bottom of the ninth, but it was just a single run on a Ryan Theriot single. Overall, the Cubs were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, another pitiful offensive outing of missed opportunities. Said a frustrated Lou after the game, "We're not going to quit, that I can tell you. But you can't continue to lose these type of ballgames. You just can't." Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski expressed his optimism around the Sox current win-streak, saying, "Four in a row is a big step, and I feel like we are playing better. You are starting to see positive signs, and that's all you can ask for at this point." The teams wrap the first part of this year's series (already 'won' by the Sox) later tonight as two struggling pitchers - Gavin Floyd and Ted Lilly - duke it out on the mound (7 p.m., ESPN).
