Bank of America Cinema Releases New Schedule

By Rob Christopher in Arts & Entertainment on Jun 23, 2010 7:30PM

2010_6_23bankofamericacinema.jpg $5 ($3 if you're a kid) for a short subject, usually a chapter of a vintage serial, and a feature-length movie: who needs the multiplex anyway? Operated by cinephiles as a non-profit labor of love, Bank of America Cinema at 4901 W. Irving Park presents a stellar lineup of classics and rarities every Saturday night at 7:30pm. This weekend the main attraction is Howard Hughes' notorious "sex Western" The Outlaw, starring Walter Huston, Thomas Mitchell, and Jane Russell's cleavage. The theater has just announced the remainder of their schedule through December, and it's overstuffed with gems.

Among the highlights: Clifton Webb as John Philip Sousa in a 4th of July weekend screening of Stars and Stripes Forever; the blacklisted film Salt of the Earth, for Labor Day weekend; a Peter Lorre double feature for Halloween (Mad Love and The Face Behind the Mask); and Arthur Penn's shot-in-Chicago Mickey One, starring Warren Beatty and featuring stunning use of Chicago locations like Marina City.

Also on tap is a rather propitiously scheduled presentation of Robert Flaherty's lyrical ode to nature, Louisiana Story, which was bankrolled by Standard Oil. All screenings are from 16mm or 35mm prints, with some on loan from the archives of UCLA and Sony Repertory. For additional details check out their Facebook page.
