QUICK SPINS: Diskjokke, Solex Vs Cristina Martinez & Jon Spencer

In which we take a quick look at a few recent or upcoming musical releases.

Diskjokke
En Fin Tid

2010_06_disjokke.jpg Diskjokke's mom calls him Joachim Dyrdahl, but we'll just refer to him as dreamy. On En Fin Tid he pulls together eight songs that come together to tell an audio story. The tracks gently take you from one destination to another and sink you deep into their sensuous pleasures. The album opens with "Reset And Begin," and you can feel the humidity rise around you. The sensation is akin to floating in a pool of cool milk situated in the middle of a rain forest. The song is steamy and languid, burbling jungle beats inviting you into their embrace. "En fin tid" picks up the pace, transporting us to a beach-side house party. The beats are still supple, bending under our fingers, but the tempo is firming up. From there the album becomes the perfect soundtrack to a late night summer's sinuous thrum of feet pounding on grass along to the beat. It's just after 2 a.m. music that's not ready to chill out yet, but realizes the frenzy of the party is gone and the part of the evening that involves wet kisses and feather touch fingers is nigh upon you.

Solex Vs Cristina Martinez & Jon Spencer
Amsterdam Throwdown, Kingstreet Showdown

2010_06_solex_cristina_jon.jpg Well goddamn if Jon Spencer and Cristina Martinez are not still the sexy couple in all the indie rock world. And we're not talking the namby-pamby doe eyed crap people call indie rock today. We're talking about dark eyed and dangerous indie, the kind that drips with actual sex and not the fruitless pursuit of a life-affirming hug. It's been a while since we've heard from either of them on the musical front, with both Jon's Blues Explosion and the duo's Boss Hogg having been largely dormant in recent years, so we're pleased to see them come back with a new collaboration roping in Solex a.k.a Elisabeth Esselink. Her touch adds a swing to the proceedings that rubs up against Spencer's gut-bucket inclinations and Martinez's sexy yet sinister vocals. The group's musical DNA is visible to the naked eye, stitching R&B and Blues over beats whose cool detachment allows room for honest to gawd funk to seep into creating a pastiche whose stitches show clearly at the outset, but quickly disappear as the music flows over to create its own unique skin to create a whole new beast.
