The Morning After: Cubs Halt Sox' Streak

The White Sox 11-game winning streak came to an end yesterday as the Cubs put together a solid offensive effort to top their South Side rivals 8-6 in the last game of this year's Crosstown rivalry [Cubs recap, Sox recap]. Carlos Quentin put the Sox out in front early, singling in two runs in the first for a 2-0 lead. The Cubs struck back in the top of the third, though, as Tyler Colvin sparked the team with a three-run homer. Derrek Lee and Geovany Soto added RBI doubles over the next few innings to extend the Cubs' lead to 6-2. Paul Konerko belted a solo homer (his 20th of the season) to cut the lead to 6-3, but the Cubs struck back thanks to a Soriano homer and another RBI from Colvin. The Sox mounted a two-out rally off of Cubs' reliever Carlos Marmol in the bottom of the ninth, cutting the lead to 8-6. But with the tying run on base, Marmol managed to strikeout Alex Rios to end the Sox winning streak and get the Cubs back in the win column.
Ryan Dempster stuck out eight over seven innings, allowing only three runs, to get his sixth win on the season while John Danks, who was responsible for six runs, got his sixth loss of the year. As for the Sox' rally in the ninth, Lou could only say, "Thank God we had that big cushion." Said Ozzie, "We made them suffer a little bit. And when you bring your closer in and you make him suffer like that, that means we don't give up. We keep fighting all the way to the end."
The Cubs also await word from the players' union about their indefinite ban on Carlos Zambrano, who the team hasn't heard from since Friday night's incident in the dugout.
The Cubs now stay at home at Wrigley for a series against the Pirates, starting tonight (7:05 p.m., CSN) while the Sox head down the road to Kansas City (7:10 p.m., WCIU).
