The Morning After: Sox, Cubs Both Fall

Sox Can't Rally Past Royals
The Sox mounted a furious rally late against Kansas City but it wasn't enough as they lost 7-6, their third loss in their last four games. Jake Peavy threw six good innings, allowing three runs, but the Royals teed off on the Sox' bullpen for four more runs. Still, the Sox' offense tried to storm back as they scored five runs in the eighth, including a bases loaded triple by Brent Lillibridge, but the rally then died out. Gordon Beckham took the glass-half-full approach, saying, "We were down 7-1 against one of the best pitchers in the American League [Zack Greinke], and to even get back in the game and make it a game was good. We look at it as a positive. The last two games that we've lost, we've really battled back and haven't given up." The Sox now take a day off and head to Texas for a weekend series, starting tomorrow night (7:05 p.m., CSN).
Cubs Boot Game To Bucs
Stop us if you've heard this one before: the Cub's starter (Tom Gorzelanny, in this case) pitched five scoreless innings but a costly error and no offense once again sunk to the Cubs in a 2-0 loss to the Pirates. An Aramis Ramirez error in the eighth put the first baserunner on and the Pirates scored twice off of reliever Andrew Cashner; though none of the runs were earned, it was Cashner's fourth straight outing where runs were scored while he was on the hill. The Cubs also went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position including... ah, who cares? The Reds come to town for a four game set starting this afternoon (1:20 p.m., CSN).
