Asian Carp and Rabid Bats, Oh My!

2010_06_01_bats.jpg We might have an enduring fascination with the Asian Carp Takeover of 2010, but we also care about the presence of other crazy animals in and around Illinois as well. Lake County Health Officials have found a rabid bat in the bedroom of a Lake County home on June 27. It is unclear how these rabid bats have become infected, but this not-so-auspicious bat discovered last weekend is the sixth rabid bat found in Lake County this year.

In order to prevent any human infections, Lake County health officials have advised residents to stay away from bats in the area. In addition to staying away from these infested bats, Lake County health experts advise residents to vaccinate their pets and to contact the health department (847-949-9925) if they see any bats acting strangely or if they become in direct contact with infected bats. The presence of rabid bats around Chicago is not unheard of, as there have been rabid bats discovered in Joliet, Naperville, and on the North Side of Chicago over the past year. Let's hope the Asian Carp and these rabid bats aren't jointly plotting to takeover the Chicago any time soon.
