Get Nasty With The Baby Magic

By Sarah Cobarrubias in Arts & Entertainment on Jul 6, 2010 5:40PM

There’s something shamefully alluring about seemingly innocent girls talking dirty, as long as they’re of legal age of course. And that’s just what The Baby Magic does. The little-known local three-some delivers minimalist, catchy indie-pop contrasted by vulgar lyrics, touching on subjects such as boners, violent sex and scat. At the head of this shocking trio is lead-lady Mary Beth Brennan, who also plays under the moniker Baggy Time, delivering lyrics like “I want to fuck like a sailor” (“Ass Against These Hands”) in her cutesy, childlike vocals.

Brennan is just plain adorable, even more so with a name that sounds like that of a Catholic school girl, but her sweet girl guise just makes her stage antics even more shocking. We’re talking about air-humping, fun with knives and maybe even a few sex toys. And in the same manner, the band’s recorded material sounds relatively clean and composed, but their live performance takes on a much sloppier, even thrashier feel as Brennan doesn't fuss over perfectly delivered songs but rather embraces being a wild, often offensive spectacle.

Of course, The Baby Magic requires a certain unrefined taste, and you may very well hate them. But if you can let loose to some hilariously vulgar tunes with catchy hooks, then head on down to the Empty Bottle tomorrow for a night of drunken catharsis. And since the band is hard at work this summer writing songs for their upcoming album, chances are they’ll give us a sneak peek at some unheard material.

The Baby Magic Performs Wednesday, July 7 at the Empty Bottle, 1035 N Western, $5, 9:30 pm, 21+
