Manitoba Creates "Lake Jonathan Toews"

By Karl Klockars in News on Jul 7, 2010 8:20PM

What has Chicago done for its sports icons and success stories lately? Built a statue of Michael Jordan that we dress up when we see fit? Made a Harry Caray statue that people hang dead goats on from time to time? Built a Champion's Plaza outside of the Cell? "Poppycock," says Manitoba. "We're so proud of our native son and Blackhawk champion Jonathan Toews that we're going to name a freaking lake for the guy."

Okay, there are a zillion lakes up there, so it's kinda like us naming a single square of sidewalk after someone, but still it's a nice thought. Yahoo Sports' Puck Daddy blog reports that Premiere Greg Salinger announced the lake renaming this morning, saying "Manitoba has 100,000 lakes. I know Jonathan likes to fish with his dad; he's been up at Aikens Lake, fishing up there. So we're going to name a lake after him."

Toews is bringing Lord Stanley's Beverage Vessel up north to Winnipeg this Sunday - are you paying attention, WheresTheCup? - and while the lake in question hasn't yet been determined, one would hope they figure it out quickly enough so he could take the Cup on an inaugural cruise of his eponymous body of water. It's not every day you can float a party barge out on the calm, cool waters of Lake You.

What's next? The Patrick Kane reservoir, the Byfuglien basin, Loch Hossa? The team does have a beer named for their victory - how about Blackhawk Point?
