The Morning After

Sox Slam Mariners
The Sox were firing on all cylinders last night on the way to an 11-0 romp over the Mariners. Gavin Floyd pitched seven scoreless innings and the bullpen followed suit with two more goose eggs for the shutout. Meanwhile, the Sox were active at the plate, sprinting out to an 8-0 lead after just three innings. In the first inning, the Sox used singles and doubles to knock runners home but in the second inning, they just said, "Screw it," and used the long ball as Alexei Ramirez and Paul Konerko homered. Andruw Jones added to the tally with a three-run shot in the fifth. The Sox have outscored Seattle 17-1 over the first two games of their series and they hope to continue that trend when they go for the sweep three in a row tonight (7:10 p.m., CSN).

Astros Best Cubs
In what might have been his last start as a Cub, Ted Lilly pitched well, 5.2 innings of shutout baseball. But it was all for naught as the Astros roughed up reliever Andrew Cashner for six runs in the seventh and a 6-1 win over the Cubs. The Astros got the bulk of those runs on a Lance Berkman grand slam. Meanwhile, the Cubs offense was, again, impotent, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and squeaking out only a single run in the ninth on Tyler Colvin's 16th homer of the year. As for the Lilly trade rumors, after the game, Lou waved them off, saying, "Let's not talk about it until we get some word. Let's hope we'll have him out there at Wrigley for us." The Cubs try to take the series in this afternoon's rubber match with Randy Wells getting the start (1:05 p.m., CSN).
