The Morning After

Sox Clip M's
It was a pretty exciting night at The Cell last night and that doesn't even include the Mayor's close call. Down 5-1 early, the Sox rallied for a 6-5 win over the Mariners, extending their winning streak to three games. Gordon Beckham belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning and in the fifth, Alexei Ramirez and Paul Konerko both smacked solo shots to bring the Sox to a 5-5 tie. After that display of power, though, it was an Alex Rios RBI single in the seventh that scored the winning run for the Sox. Starter Mark Buehrle gave up all five Mariner runs and got a no-decision as Matt Thornton got the win in relief with Bobby Jenks notching the save. The Sox hope to complete the Seattle sweep tonight when Freddy Garcia takes the hill (7:10 p.m., CSN).

Astros Dump Cubs
The Cubs' struggle against the Astros continued last night as the North Siders fell 8-1, dropping to 4-8 this year against Houston and 19-30 against NL Central teams. Randy Wells gave up three runs over 5.2 innings and then the craptastic bullpen duo of Brian Schlitter (he of a 12.00 ERA) and Bob Howry (WHY, GOD, WHY???) gave up five more runs. As usual, the Cubs offense was equally awful, going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and leaving nine men on base. Fans get a reprieve as the team is off today before hitting up Colorado for a three-game series starting tomorrow night (8:10 p.m., WGN).
