Eyes and ears may be fixed squarely on the bigger-than-ever Lollapalooza this weekend, but if you’re taking a pass on the enormous crowds and steep ticket prices, Northalsted Market Days offer a fun (and far more wallet-friendly) alternative for music, food and summer festival people-watching.

Covering six blocks of Halsted from Belmont to Addison, the two-day fest sports a lineup of more than 40 musical acts—ranging to the well-known to the obscure—with a dedicated jazz stage among the four performance areas blocked out for music. And while we’ll be able to learn the answer to our burning question of “what has Jon Secada been up to since the ‘90s?” (the adult-contemporary crooner headlines Saturday evening), we’re more excited to see our rock n’ roll hero, Joan Jett, when she closes out the festival on Sunday.

Music, arts, crafts and local food are pretty much standard for Chicago’s summer street festivals, though Market Days has one of the more distinct personalities among that crowded field . The weekend party has always uniquely felt more colorful and crazy than most (the event is put on my the same folks who run Chicago Pride Fest), so if you've been hiding out from street fests all season, Market Days is as good of a one you'll find to get in some outdoor merry-making, day drinking and overall summer shenanigans.

The full music lineup is after the jump.
