Sox Fall To O's In 10
The Sox finished their trip to Baltimore on a down note, losing three of the four games against the Orioles which culminated in last night's 3-2 tenth inning loss. An Alex Rios double gave the Sox an early 1-0 lead but Baltimore scored twice in the sixth to take the lead. Paul Konerko rescued the Sox, hitting the game-tying solo homer to force extra innings. But it would be the Orioles' Brian Roberts who would play the conquering hero, hitting a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th off of J.J. Putz. The Sox now head home for a new homestand that begins with a big three-game series against the Twins, who are now tied atop the AL Central with the Sox. Freddy Garcia takes the hill in the first game tonight (7:10 p.m., CSN).
Giants Tower Over Cubs In 11
The Cubs also fell victim to a walk-off hit, this one a little less impressive as a sac-fly in the bottom of the 11th carried the Giants to a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. The game marked the return of Carlos Zambrano to the Cubs' rotation and Z pitched okay, giving up two runs over five innings but also walking seven. Alfonso Soriano's two-run double in the first gave the Cubs an early 2-0 lead and after the Giants later tied it, a Tyler Colvin RBI single gave the Cubs the lead back 3-2 in the top of the sixth only to have the Giants tie the game in the bottom of the inning and then take the game in the 11th on Pat Burrell's sac fly to score the ageless Edgar Renteria. And so the Cubs freefall, now losers of 11 of 12, continues. They'll attempt to pull out of this tailspin again tonight in San Francisco (9:15 p.m., WGN).
