Sox Stumble To Second
The Sox had a down-right Cubs-like performance, leaving 12 runners on base and failing to score many runs on several opportunities en route to a 6-1 loss to the Twins. The loss drops the Sox into second place in the AL Central, a game behind Minnesota. The Sox hit 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, loading the bases in three different innings but only squeaking out one run, dooming them to the loss. Gavin Floyd gave up all six runs over 6.2 innings pitched for the Sox. Floyd remained optimistic after the game: "We have six more games with them, and a ton of baseball in between those six. Anything can happen. Just go out there and try and ignore today, look forward to tomorrow." Indeed, the two teams will square off again in a three-game series next week. Until then, though, the Sox host the Tigers in hopes of making up a little ground over the weekend, beginning tonight (7:10 p.m., WCIU).
Cubs Lose In Last At-Bat Again
The Cubs wrapped up a tough stint in San Francisco with their third walk-off loss in four games, falling to the Giants 8-7 on the last at-bat. The loss came after the Cubs had actually managed to rally from an early deficit. They had taken an early 3-1 lead thanks to RBI doubles from Xavier Nady and Randy Wells but the Giants chipped away and rode a big fifth inning to a 7-3 lead. But the Cubs fought back thanks to RBI doubles from Fukudome and Koyie Hill and in the top of the eighth tied the game at 7-7 on a Starlin Castro RBI single. But the struggles of rookie Andrew Cashner continued as he loaded the bases and gave up the game-winning single to Andres Torres, dropping Cashner to 1-5 on the year; starter Randy Wells had been roughed up earlier, allowing seven runs (six earned). The Cubs, losers of 14 of their last 17, make their way to St. Louis for a weekend set, starting tonight (7:15 p.m., CSN).
