Bears Looking To Add Veteran QB

Even before Caleb Hanie suffered an injury in the Bears' first preseason game, many thought the Bears would be wise to add a veteran quarterback to their roster to back up Jay Cutler. With Hanie's arm in a sling and the only other QB in camp their rookie sixth-round pick Dan LeFevour, the team is now looking to do just that.
Former Chiefs and Redskins quarterback Todd Collins looks to be the current front-runner as the Bears made him an offer on Monday. The team is waiting to hear back from Collins, who played under offensive coordinator Mike Martz's system when they were both in Kansas City. The Bears also reached out to others familiar with Martz's system, like Trent Green and Damon Huard, but both have chosen to remain retired. Martz had been lobbying for a vet QB since his hiring, but it apparently took a bum wing on his number two to get GM Jerry Angelo to listen. They should've grabbed Mark Bulger when they had their chance last spring.
Meanwhile, the other injury news coming out of the Bears' first exhibition is that rookie safety Major Wright will require surgery on his fractured finger. While he might still be able to return by the regular season opener, does this prevent him from winning a starting job? His performance in camp and in Satruday's game before the injury suggested he was heading to the top of the depth chart. Now it may take him a bit longer to crack the starting line-up.
