Tyranena Brewing, besides being one more reason to road trip to Wisconsin, has been expanding its offerings locally. Had the opportunity to buy a draft of Tyranena's "Rocky's Revenge" a couple months back at Uncommon Ground Devon.
This is a blended brown ale, a portion of which is aged in bourbon barrels. It pours a deep ruby color from the tap, with a thick head teeming with aromas of bourbon, chocolate and vanilla. That only serves as a prelude to the blast of flavors once this beer hits the palate.
Everything you pick up on the nose of Rocky's Revenge is intensified when sipping. The transformation from teasing the nostrils to assaulting the palate was a bit hard to handle, initially. All that is atop an underlying flavor of wood from the bourbon barrels wrapped in a creamy mouthfeel.
Other bars that sell Rocky's Revenge, according to Beer Menus Chicago, are the Fountainhead (1970 W. Montrose), Four Moon Tavern (1847 W. Roscoe), Risqué Café (3419 N. Clark) and the Beer Bistro (1061 W. Madison).
