As School Starts, So Does School Violence

2010_01_19_CPS.jpg The Chicago Public Schools' new school year is just a few days old and already a pair of violent acts have shaken the system, leaving one student dead and a student and teacher wounded. DeAntonio Goss, a 16-year-old sophomore at Bowen High School, was shot and killed yesterday afternoon, the first CPS student killed this school year. The shooting happened around 2:45 p.m. and another student, an 18-year-old senior, was also wounded in the shooting. Police say the shooting may have stemmed from a fight at school earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, about the same time as the shooting, a teacher at Josiah L. Pickard Elementary School in Pilsen was stabbed as he tried to break up a fight amongst students.

At some point during the disturbance, a 13-year-old boy allegedly bumped into the teacher twice, brushing his left shoulder area. The teacher felt pain and realized he had been cut. When the suspect left the school, someone who saw the incident confronted the boy and told him to come back, the report said.

The report said the boy allegedly held up the bloody cutting instrument and dropped it down a sewer, saying: "Look, I'm getting rid of it!" He then fled.

The teacher received six stitches to close the wound and has been released. No charges have been filed against the child suspected in the attack.
