Calls for Great America Boycott Over Muslim Day

2010_09_11_raging.jpg As Six Flags Great America gets ready to celebrate "Muslim Family Day" on Sunday, September 12, conservative wingnuts are up in arms that the amusement park would be so insensitive to have such a day the same weekend that the country is honoring and remembering the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attack.

Calls for a boycott of all Six Flags parks are being spread across the internet, including a Facebook page BOYCOTT SIX FLAGS FOR MUSLIMS [sic] DAY 9-12-10 that currently has almost 2,000 members. Conservative columnist and radio talk show host Debbie Schlussel has also expressed her outrage, saying:

So, it’s the middle of the summer, and your family and kids need something to do. You decide to take them to an amusement park. Best to avoid Six Flags . . . unless you’re Muslim. If you are, the red carpet is rolled out on the most interesting of dates, September 12th. I’m sure that this is the day after 9/11 is just coincidence, right?

Actually, it is -- this weekend marks the end of Ramadan, an Islamic month of fasting, a "coincidence" that has even led many mosque leaders to send out announcements to their local communities trying to inform residents that their several day celebrations are solely related to Ramadan, and not 9/11. But a little thing like facts won't get in the way of some folks, who say Six Flags is "providing family entertainment for the entire [Islamic] murderous family!"

That's fine, let the ignorant masses stay home on Sunday -- it will be a shorter line at Raging Bull for the rest of us.
