Authorities continue to investigate an unusual and gruesome crime scene in Evanston where a man was found decapitated near an exploded pipe bomb which apparently killed the man. Police also detonated another explosive device found nearby. A man walking his dog discovered the body early this morning near Nichols Middle School and alerted police; the school was shut down for the day.

He also said neighbors told him they had heard a loud explosion about 4 a.m., something confirmed by area residents. He said police told him they had come out earlier to investigate the sound of the explosion but were unable to find anything at that time.

While the medical examiner's office ruled that the explosion killed the man, authorities haven't determined if the explosion was accidental or on purpose.
