beignets Every Chicago schoolchild knows that Illinois is the Land of Lincoln, but if it’s been some time since you’ve thought about Abe, why not head to the Newberry Library’s free lecture on October 27, “The Firey Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery”? This talk, by noted Civil War historian Eric Foner, traces Lincoln’s career from Illinois to D.C. and his rise to the head of the Republican party. If you’re interested in following a more recent Illinois president’s trajectory, chow down some Cajun food at one of Dixie Kitchen’s two branches, recommended by a young state senator named Barack Obama on WTTW’s “Check, Please!”
