The Art Coast of Michigan

Drive 140-some miles out of the city to the twin towns of Saugatuck and Douglas, Michigan, for a relaxed beach vacation without the crowds. In the fall, this popular vacation spot thins out a bit, but the beauty of the area remains. Ox-Bow, the artists’ retreat affiliated with the Art Institute of Chicago, put the region on the map for painters and writers in the early 20th century. The lure of the area’s natural beauty remains and Saugatuck/Douglas bills itself as the “art coast of Michigan.” From October 9 to 10, during the 33rd Annual Gallery Stroll Weekend, the studios and galleries of the two towns will open their doors to visitors, with many artists on site to talk about their work. And be sure to take a cruise on the Star of Saugatuck paddleboat before its last ride of the season on October 28, which will float past the area’s famous sand dunes.
Saugatuck and Douglas are welcoming to all visitors and are well known for being a favorite spot with gay and lesbian tourists, with many LBGT-owned businesses and visitors. It’s also a favorite spot for families—bring the kids to the Saugatuck Drugstore Soda Fountain for real old-fashion malteds and chocolate phosphates.
