Bears Cut Mark Anderson

The new era of accountability at Halas Hall for everyone except Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo continues with the release of underachieving defensive end Mark Anderson. Anderson made an immediate impact on the Bears as a rookie during their 2006 Super Bowl run, with a rookie franchise record 12 sacks. But he never was the same player and recorded only 9 sacks in the three-plus years following. It was hoped among Bears brass that the signing of Julius Peppers would lead to mismatches the other defensive linemen could take advantage of during games. Even With Peppers playing for the most part as advertised, those mismatches have not happened.
To fill Anderson's roster spot, the Bears signed former New Orleans Saint Charles Grant to the squad. Grant, who was on the injured reserve list for the Saints' Super Bowl championship, recorded 47 sacks and 106 career starts.
