The suspect, described as a white male in his early 40's, 5'8" and stocky, first approached three construction workers in Beecher working on a burned out farmhouse. The suspect first asked about buying the place, then drove away. He later returned, asked about buying building materials, then opened fire, killing one and critically wounding another. A third worker ran into a cornfield and dialed 911.
The Indiana shooting occurred later, when the suspect approached 62-year-old Keith Dahl and asked for his wallet. When Dahl refused, the suspect mumbled something about honey bees in the area and beekeeping, then shot Dahl in the shoulder, left arm and shoulder and took off with his wallet.
