An elderly senior citizen couple were peacefully resting Thursday night, but were abruptly wakened when officers of the Cook County Sheriff raided their home executing a search warrant.
Anna Jakymec, 84, and her husband Andrij Jakymec, 89, who suffers from Alzheimer's and cancer were detained while the officers ransacked the house located on the 5600 block of South Kilbourn on the Southwest Side.
The officers were looking for crystal meth, cocaine, guns, money and a 23-year-old suspect. The officers ripped open cabinets, kicked down doors, destroyed locks and broke windows in a diligent effort to find the contraband. The most potent drug recovered was aspirin.
After causing more than $3,000 in damage the officers realized they had received the wrong address from their informant. Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas signed off on the warrant.
When the officers were exiting the last communication was that they were not responsible for the damage, the Tribune reported. It wasn’t until the news media got a hold of this blunder that the Sheriff’s office changed their tune. "We are now working with the family to address the property damage," the Sheriff's office told the Sun Times.
