Rothschild Exercises Option, Stays With Cubs

They may not have a manager yet, but the Cubs know who their pitching coach will be next season. Larry Rothschild exercised the option year on his contract. Since coming to the Cubs in 2002, Rothschild has had the staying power of a cockroach. If interim manager Mike Quade doesn't get the job permanently, Rothschild will be coaching the pitchers for his sixth manager.
Rothschild's been a steady and solid pitching coach for the Cubs, although his staff has been cursed by injuries. Even with all the turmoil on the North Side this season, Cubs starters still had 96 quality starts this season, second in the majors. Rothschild should also get some credit for Carlos Zambrano's late-season turnaround. He and Quade also have a close working relationship, which General Manager Jim Hendry will certainly take into consideration as he looks for the new Cubs skipper.
