Hockey
Blackhawks 4, Sabres 3: Patrick Sharp scored two goals for the second straight night, including the game winner in the closing period, and Marty Turco stopped 38 of 41 shots to earn his first win on home ice as the Blackhawks beat Buffalo for the second time this week. It looked as though the Blackhawks were going to be run off their own ice in the first period as Buffalo jumped to a 2-1 lead. But a Marian Hossa goal off a pinpoint pass from Brent Seabrook tied the game and put some wind in the Hawks sails. Dave Bolland also scored for the Hawks, who play St. Louis tomorrow.
College Football
Michigan State 26, Illinois 6: Illinois played tough for one half, but the Spartans were simply the better team after halftime as Michigan State beat the Illini to go 7-0 for the first time in 44 years. MSU quarterback Kirk Cousins shook off a poor first half to finish 13 of 24 for 201 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown pass to B.J. Cunningham. As for the Illini, there's no talk about "moral victory" like when they hung tough against Ohio State; they just stunk up East Lansing.
Notre Dame 44, Western Michigan 20: Brian Kelly's Fighting Irish continues to feast on lower opposition as the Irish offense fired on all cylinders against the Broncos. Wide Receiver Michael Floyd, playing with a strained hamstring, caught 3 touchdown passes to pace the Irish offense. The defense, which kept Western Michigan in the game the first half, steeled up and played the Broncos offense tight after the half.
Northern Illinois 45, Buffalo 14 The Huskies power running game was the story here, as running back Chad Spann scored twice and rushed for 111 yards in DeKalb. Quarterback Chandler Harnish threw two TD passes and backup QB Jordan Lynch scored on a 90-yard touchdown run for NIU.
