Dart Halts Foreclosures Again

By Chuck Sudo in News on Oct 20, 2010 2:00PM

For the second time in two years, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced that his department will not act upon foreclosure evictions related to Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase and GMAC/Ally Financial until those three financial institutions can provide affidavits stating that each of the foreclosures were examined and that there are no problems with them.

Dart's announcement follows recent moves by the three institutions to halt foreclosures after mounting concerns that the three financial institutions were fast-tracking evictions without thoroughly examining foreclosure documents. Dart defended himself from questions that the announcement was related to mounting reports that he's mulling a campaign for mayor.

Two years ago, Dart halted evictions after it was discovered that banks were not sending out eviction notices to renters in the buildings the banks owned. Evictions resumed after court officials put measures in place to protect renters.
