One for the Road: Los Straitjackets

By Chuck Sudo in Arts & Entertainment on Oct 22, 2010 9:30PM

In the music world a band can take a gimmick and either beat it to death or be very successful with it. KISS, as an example, does both.

The gimmick for Nashville-based surf guitar combo Los Straitjackets is the luchador wrestling masks they wear onstage. Those expressionless covers belie the proficiency of the band and the fun they have onstage and with the audience. A Los Straitjackets gig is, to be base, a shit-kicking good time.

Normally, fans of the band would have to wait until street fest season to see them trek out to Berwyn and see them at Fitzgerald's, along with partners in rockabilly Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys. Tonight both bands are going to turn the Martyrs into a Third Coast surf party. The show starts at 9:30 and admission is $20.
