Dubious Event Scheduled To Help Local Musicians

By Tankboy in Arts & Entertainment on Oct 27, 2010 5:40PM

2010_10_rawk.jpg Rockit Wrigley, itself the HOME of rock and/or roll, is hosting a tweet-up dedicated to the subject of rocking out business-stylee. In their own words, "If you one day have aspirations to be a musician, rock club owner, venue promoter, public relations expert, tour manager, music journalist, or even to own your very own rock and roll branded business then this is the tweet up of the year to attend." An who will guide you through this hallway ending in the stage lights of success? Natalie Slater of BakeAndDestroy.net, Jerry Bryant of JBTV, Jaime Black of Q101 and the CVU Podcast, and Metro publicist Jenny Lizak.

O.K., let us level with you here, and run through the list of speakers. Get in a room with Lizak and you'll learn all you need to know; of all the speakers she is the one you should listen to. Bryant's good for some local color, but as his years of history with JBTV have illustrated the man is a huge rock and/pr roll fanboy (therefore awesome to have on the side of your band) but he's not going to help you get anywhere. Black may be able to book your band on Q101's least listened to show, but we're not exactly sure how he has any ground upon which to stand and help you advance your career. And Slater bakes a mean motherfucking cupcake, and we kind of love everything about her, but we're not exactly sure what that has to do with music or making your band successful.

So, whatever, we'll give all these folks their due for taking time out to share their own corner of knowledge with this tweet-up's attendees, but if you REALLY want to make it in the world of rock and/or roll let us save you from lining Billy Dec's pockets with the money you'll spend on overpriced drinks at Rockit.

Ready?

Write good songs. If you can't do that then no number of tweet-ups / panels / seminars / conferences are going to save you. Unless you look like Jared Leto, in which case all bets are off.

Rocker Tweetup is November 5 at Rockit Wrigley, 3700 N Clark, 7 p.m., FREE, 21+
