The U.S. National Archives has a Flickr pool that you can get sucked in for hours just browsing the photos capturing great and minor moments in this country's history. We decided to put together a gallery of shots showing the Chicago of years past, from the bombing of the Federal Building, allegedly by the Industrial Workers of the World, in 1918 to shots of the post white-flight urban decay of the 1970s.

The photographs here feature such award-winning photojournalists as Danny Lyon and Sun-Times Pulitzer Prize winner John H. White.
