The Sculpture Ojects & Functional Art Expo, a.k.a. SOFA, is holding court in Navy Pier's Festival Hall this weekend, so Chicagoist decided to head down to see what kind of art the Undertaxed 2% Club is spending their thousands of dollars on nowadays. SOFA, as the name implies, is heavy on the sculpture and contemporary glass, but there are 2D offerings as well. The styles on hand range wildly from the glitz of glass superstars such as Jon Kuhn, Dale Chihuly and Lino Tagliapietra to the grotesque art of Avery Palmer and Esther Shimazu, which upset the delicate sensibilities of the Real Housewives in attendance.
New to the show this year is the inclusion of the Intuit Show of Folk and Outsider Art, featuring 16 dealers that provide a nice contrast to the SOFA offerings. Intuit joins SOFA after being booted from the Merchandise Mart's Art Chicago in 2009.
SOFA continues today through 8 p.m. and tomorrow, November 6, from noon until 6 p.m.
