The video’s theme was inspired by M.I.A.’s controversial music video “Born Free,” which depicts graphic scenes of ginger genocide. White Mystery’s video, in contrast, features a euphoric crowd of redheads all dressed in white and frolicking around the Empty Bottle to the amped-up, grungy garage rock of “Powerglove.” Alex and Francis White take their places on stage, performing with the same intense passion you can find at any of their live shows. And instead of ending with the bloody mess of a mass murder like its counterpart, “Powerglove” has its happy redheads bouncing around onstage with the band.
White Mystery is quickly becoming a staple in Chicago’s music scene, playing countless shows all across the city and winning us over with their fluffy mop tops and no-frills garage rock. You can catch their live performance for free November 18 at Rockit Bar, where the duo will be holding a video premiere and show to celebrate the release of the video. Opening will be another local garage rock duo, Magic Milk. The show’s going to be packed, so get there early to claim your spot near the stage, and stick around afterward for a DJ set by White Mystery. In the meantime, you can check out the video for “Powerglove” below.
