Preckwinkle Tending to Last-Minute Ward Business, Health Insurance Concerns

2010_01_22_preckwinkle.jpg Before she takes the reins of Cook County Government, Board President-elect Toni Preckwinkle is tending to some last-minute business in her 4th Ward. More important to Preckwinkle is that there's no gap in her health insurance coverage between moving from her Alderman seat to the County Board.

The health insurance concerns stem from a recent illness that struck Preckwinkle's husband, Zeus, while he was in the Philippines for his annual teaching trip. Zeus Preckwinkle picked up a bacterial lung infection and didn't have it treated until he returned to Chicago.

The bill for Zeus Preckwinkle's medical treatment was $28,000, most of which was covered by Toni Preckwinkle's city health insurance policy. "I've got to see what the story is on our health insurance, because I can't afford to be without," Toni Preckwinkle said.

Before she moves on to the County Board, Preckwinkle will be working on ongoing real estate projects at 47th and Cottage Grove and 52nd and Harper.
