The Deal Is On? Reports Say Google Wants Groupon

2010_11_19_groupon.png It's almost a carved-in-stone axiom of the internet. Call it Rule #1.0 × 10^100: "Everything that is popular and successful on the internet will be eventually swallowed up whole by Google for a metric shitload of money." Accordingly, we were surprised for about 2 seconds when we saw Crain's report on the little birdie in the ear of the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital blog saying "Google wants Groupon."

ATD author Kara Swisher says Google and Groupon are both keeping quiet about the potential deal, but her sources point to a figure in the billions if it goes through. As if things couldn't get better for the Chicago-based deal site, they were also included in Oprah's final "Favorite Things" show this morning, which is one step shy of being touched directly by God.

If a deal like this goes through, all beers are on Groupon founder Andrew Mason, but we'll have to sign up to drink 500 of them to start the party.
