Chicagoist Mix #5: Adulture
By Jake Guidry in Arts & Entertainment on Nov 24, 2010 5:20PM
Chicagoist Mix Series is an ongoing feature that profiles local DJs and features a mix compiled exclusively for Chicagoist. This is mix No. 5, brought to you by Adulture.
We're excited about this mix for a few reasons. One, Adulture is one of the up and coming producers here in Chicago, one we think will blow up at any time. Second, he's got a keen ear for nu-disco and house, some of our favorite genres. Third, it's a short work week for most of us and this is just the shit to get our holiday weekend off on the right foot. We mean it; Mix No. 5 is one sexy son of a bitch.
Garrett Shrigley, a.k.a. Adulture, has been around for a hot minute, including some time as his former alias, Le Principle. Regardless of the name, Adulture has been killing it with his singles, EPs and remixes, including an EP on the local Dust Traxx imprint. And, of course, there's Paper Cat, which he produced alongside formerly-Chicago-based OCD Automatic. What it comes down to is that you need to keep an eye on this kid. In fact, you can, tonight, when he'll play alongside the one and only Frankie Knuckles and Tensnake at Smart Bar. It's a must see show.
Check below for our brief interview with Adulture and Mix No. 5.
Chicagoist: How'd you come to be a DJ?
Adulture: I assume the reason for where I am today is just the fact that I grow with the environment and situations around me. I was living in Columbus, Ohio around a time when parties around the city had a heavy concentration on the DJ and specific themes of music. Columbus Deejays like Michael Carney & Todd Sines were large inspirations to me, not only in sense of DJing, but introducing
me to music I love today. Feeling inspired, I decided to produce and make my own music. The only way that made sense for me to get to people, was to spin records.
C: You're part of the new school here in Chicago that's trying to preserve the old school, specifically house music. How do you think the current state of house is maybe different than it used to be in Chicago?
A: I don't think that Chicago's current youth is anywhere close to being as involved with house music as previous generations were. I would really love to see that change.
C: You've got a few releases, past, present and future, notably one on Trax Records. Could you give us a little info?
A: My first EP "No Use In Crying" was released on Dust Traxx Chicago. I do have some work with Trax Records coming out soon but that is an anticipated remix of "The Chicago Southside". Expect to see random remixes here and there, including the remix "Blue Moon" by Leonardus that was included in the mix. An exciting collaboration in the works and a new EP as well!
