The Loneliest Monk Covers "Carol of the Bells"

It’s the season of giving, and The Loneliest Monk is all about spreading the Christmas spirit. The local art rock duo recorded its own version of “Carol of the Bells” and is offering a free download of the classic Ukranian carol cover. Well, almost free - it’ll cost you one tweet spreading word about the free song.

While the carol was originally written to be performed by a chorus, The Loneliest Monk performs it as an instrumental track. Leading lady Michelle Morales manipulates and distorts her cello to create devastating notes and a menacing melody, as Miles Benjamin backs her up with stark, fast-handed percussion. It has a rich, ominous sound that will no doubt add some variety to the standard cheerful and cheesy Christmas playlist.

You can also catch The Loneliest Monk live at Subterranean next month when they play a launch party for GigMaven, a new free online booking service for musicians. The duo’s live show is actually more of a theatrical experience, as they incorporate costumes, masks, and a dramatic, mysterious mood to the stage. Also playing will be headliners Netherfriends, Dozens, and Wolf in a Spacesuit.

The Loneliest Monk Plays Thursday, January 6 at Subterranean, 2011 W North Ave., 8:30 p.m., $8, 21+
