Weekend Diversion: "Hip Hop" Cupcakes Feature Cupcakes in... Blackface?

By Soyoung Kwak in Miscellaneous on Dec 11, 2010 4:00PM

If this won't make you sick of the decade-long cupcake trend, we don't know what will: Duncan Hines released a commercial with "hip hop" cupcakes that sing weird auto-tuned techno-trance (honestly, we don't know what to call this music). But that's not the weirdest, most offensive part of the whole deal - these cupcakes are in blackface.

Just when we thought commercials couldn't get any more ridiculous, Duncan Hines managed to raise that bar in less than two minutes of commercial time. Did no one honestly see this cupcake controversy coming at Duncan Hines? According to The Eater, the director of this recent Duncan Hines video is somewhat known for making poor choices when it comes to advertising. Perhaps directing advertisements for cupcakes (or just food items in general) isn't his true calling.
